Introduction: |
For the career research interview I was required to interview an engineer, and ask them questions about the job. The questions consisted of job settings, work ethics, and fundamentals of engineering fields. It required us to actually hear from someone personally about how they felt.
|
Take-a-ways: |
My biggest take-a-way from this interview was that I am actually interested in the engineering field. I had always been interested in engineering I just never knew what the job was like, and if it would be something I would enjoy personally.

Below is my interviewees answers, and my take-a-ways:

Career Research Interview
Interviewee's name: Neil Rasmussen
Interviewee’s degree: Aerospace Engineering
Interviewee’s place of employment: Work for the army force on aircraft, worked at dynetics in Florida, and now is retired
Interviewee’s email/phone: (717) 634-2416
Description of his job: He said that there was a different machines and concepts he had to constantly learn to use properly. There wasn’t as much redesigning a product as there was fixing it when he worked in the army. He said he thoroughly enjoyed being able to apply concepts to aerospace like airplanes, rockets, and helicopters.
He currently doesn’t have a job because of retirement. However, his sons are both in fields of engineering, and his grandson is attending Clemson for engineering as well.
His particular job was to fix malfunctioning parts on planes. If he found a way to solve the problem from occurring again. For example, there had been a problem with an airplane's design so he found a solution, and went to the other engineers that went through the design process of his idea.
His average schedule was Monday through Friday starting at 6 a.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m. However based on the projects going on at work his hours could vary due to meetings and deadlines.
He completed high school, went on to getting his bachelor's at USC, and then went back for his master's at USC.
He said that he would not do anything different, because he is very happy with the way his career and education went. He was able to travel by studying abroad, and he was able to have a job he continually enjoyed going to everyday.
Never be timid or lose confidence based on other people's talent. That person’s weakness may be what you’re good at. Also, try meeting new people, and getting your name out to prepare yourself for future jobs.
What surprised me most was that he was actually able to find a job the he continued to enjoy. I was also surprised the variety of companies that hire just for one job doing different task.
I learned that it’s important to really look into the field you’d like to go into before you major in it for college. He stressed to me that if you don’t enjoy it engineering fields can really be difficult.
This has influenced me to want to pursue my choice even more, but first shadow someone while I’m in high school to ensure that it’s something I’d enjoy doing for many years of my life.
